Damocles Wars is finally online

on

I don’t really know how to say this properly, so I’ll just say it simply. After more than 20 years working on it, I’ve finally put my wargame online. It’s not completely finished and probably never will be, but it’s fully playable now and in a state I’m happy to share.

This project started when I was playing a lot of wargames and feeling frustrated by some aspects of them. Rules that were unclear, situations that didn’t feel fair, games where the result didn’t match what was happening on the battlefield. I wanted something more fluid, more readable, and more focused on decisions and on what actually makes a battle fun and memorable.

So I started building my own system, just to play with friends at first. Over the years it kept evolving, being tested, reworked, sometimes completely rebuilt. What matters to me now is that the game feels right when you play it. Not perfect, but fair, readable, and immersive enough that the battle tells its own story.

A lot of design choices come from that. Reducing unnecessary dice rolls, making activations more interactive, simplifying movement and positioning, making sure both players stay engaged. The goal is always the same: spend less time on friction and more time on decisions and on the moments that make a game memorable.

Balance is also something I took very seriously. I didn’t want something approximate, so I built a system to calculate unit values based on their real impact, their role, and their interactions. Not because I’m obsessed with competition, but because a balanced game is simply more fun. Closer games, more tension, more interesting outcomes.

At the same time, I never wanted to lock players into specific miniatures. You can use whatever you already have. That’s how I play myself, and I don’t see any reason to restrict that. The same logic applies to the rest: rules are free, tools are free, and I’m putting more and more free content online because I want people to be able to try the game easily.

There’s still a lot planned. More factions, more content, historical settings, and a full campaign system that will make battles connect and really bring the game to life over time. But all of that depends on people actually playing it and giving feedback.

If you’re curious, just take a look. If you try it, even better. And if you have feedback, I’ll read it.

All the best,

William
